The Directory at Proud-Collector.com is a directory using a concept that I expected to have been exploited long ago. It combines an article directory with a link directory, giving the search engines a little more content to slurp up.

If you look at any of the internal pages, you’ll see a list of links and a list of articles side-by-side.

The directory owner has integrated a high level of Google Adsense adverts, so I’d be interested to know what their click-through-rate (CTR) is like. The adsense adverts are quite pervasive, and are almost invasive, but not quite. You can see where the adverts are compared with the content, and its clear that effort has gone into ensuring the adverts blend with the content.

I’m fairly sure this is the first combined article and link directory that I have seen. I imagine that there are others too. If you know of any, please let me know, I’m curious!

There appear to be a few directory blogs popping up now, and I wonder how the ‘market’ will cope. With so many resources out there, it can be hard work keeping up!

However, the chap at Blue Raccoon has compiled a useful list of directory resources in 1 place, and I recommend you bookmark it!

October 21st, 2006Poor Directory Submissions

The following article was written by the chap at PortProphecy on the Digital Point Forums. He has kindly given me permission to re-post the information for my readers!

It’s a good reference for directory owners and directory submitters. If you receive lots of rejections when submitting, take note!

I hope you enjoy it, its an interesting read.

Many directory owners complain of the enormous amount of crap that gets submitted to them, and in some case decent sites submitted but with very bad titles and descriptions increasing the workload on editors. Certainly the biggest contributor to these big workloads for directories is auto-submitters.

I have recently seen some new directory owners inquiring how you know if a site was submitting using auto-submitter software, and directory submitters inquiring on wherther they should use auto-submitters.

Well, I have been in the directory business for a little bit now and have gotten very good spotting the auto-submitters. The following are a few signs that a submission was auto-submitted.

Rejected Screenshot 1

The above site is the usual auto-submitted c**p. The crazy looking title and the description which is nothing but keywords give it away. Auto-submitters often just grab meta tag information for title and description, thus giving you the kind of submission as above. Site was never even reviewed. I just insta-delete. If you can’t take time to submit the right way, I won’t take time to review you. NEXT:

Rejected Screenshot 2

OK. This one is a little sneakier because the title, although certainly keyword-stuffed, doesn’t look so bad as my first example. And the description is an actual sentence! But a quick check of the site reveals both the title and description are ripped from the site’s meta tags. Delete!

Rejected Screenshot 3

Next, we have another glaring sign that someone is not using the legit method of submitting. I have my directory set to not accept submissions to the top category. How in the world did this idiot get submitted to the top?

Any sites getting submitted to the Top cat get instantly deleted/banned, and I always check the name/email to make sure I find other sites they submitted to delete/ban.

Rejected Screenshot 4

The above site may or may not have been auto-submitted, but the user decided he didn’t need to give me a description. Insta-delete. For paid submissions I will take the time to clean up titles and add descriptions, but I will NOT take time to write a description for a free submission.

If you won’t take a minute to write a good description, I won’t take but a second to delete your site and move on.

Rejected Screenshot 5

The above site may or may not have been auto-submitted, but the submitter certainly did not read my guidelines. Like so many others, I do not allow sub-domains or internal pages for free submissions (due to being overwhelmed by spammers). No need to even view his site. Insta-delete.

Rejected Screenshot 6

Again, the above site may or may not have been auto-submitted, but the submitter certainly did not read my guidelines. English sites only. Clearly this isn’t English. No need to even view his site. Insta-delete.

Free submissions are a pain and I end up rejecting 90% of them (Almost no one does the kind of things shown above in paid listings). But eventually you get good at spotting the culprit sites, thus saving time to move on to reviewing sites that do the right the thing and deserve a listing.

Tim from After 5 Web Design contacted me to let me know about a security vulnerability in the phpLD scripts. Having patched my own directories, I noticed that V2.00, V2.10 and possibly V3.06 are affected.

You can find out how to fix your directories in the article on After 5 Web Design. Take notice of this one guys!

The Crafty Tips Arts & Crafts Directory is a really interesting approach to a directory. All of the links on the directory feature a craft tip or technique, with a direct link to the site that features the tip. Links can be submitted for free, cleverly encouraging website owners to suggest tips, techniques and ideas.

The crafts include Bonsai, Candles, Ceramics, Knitting, Glass, Gifts, Origami, Sewing and many many more. The directory owner has spent a lot of time making the site look good, appealling to users and website owners.

Clever usage of integrated Google Adsense encourages a good click-through-rate (CTR) without being obtrusive. The tips plasters the site with plenty of unique keyword-rich content, making it a search-engine magnet too. Overall, a very clever application of a niche directory!

October 9th, 2006The Latest phpLD Templates

phpLDTemplates.info is a popular and respected resource for phpLinkDirectory templates. Typically the blog is updated with new templates more frequently than I do on DirectorySpy.

If you’re a commited phpLD directory owner, then I strongly recommend phpLDTemplates.info as one of your directory resources.

The second release of the Category Dumps is now available. V1.01 contains MySQL dumps for phpLinkDirectory V2.00, V3.06 and now the newly released version of V2.10.

If you want to see more categories in the dump, you can submit your category suggestions to the Category Project. All accepted suggestions will appear in later category dump releases.

Envy is a new green template by the chap behind CoJo Directory. The template is very clean (and green) with plenty of specific space for sponsor links and Google Adsense adverts.

The author has another template called Obscure, which is black and blue. This has space predominantly for Google Adsense, but it wouldn’t take much effort to add support for standard sponsor links.

Both templates have been designed for phpLinkDirectory V3.0.5 and you can download them at CoJo Directory. THere are also live demo links for each of the Obscure and Envy templates too.

The reason why I say bribe factor for the Strongest Brands directory is that the more you pay for a link, the higher the link ranks in the site listings. Each listing has a Strength Rank (SR) which loosely corresponds to how much you have paid the directory for your link.

Links are reviewed in the order that they are received, and the fee you pay does not affect how quickly your link is reviewed. It’s an interesting concept, since its left it up to the buyer to decide how much they donate.

The ranking system is designed to give you an incentive to pay more. Based on how many websites are listed and their respective SR will determine where your site ranks. You can boost your site’s ranking at any time.

This directory does add something else that’s a little different. For example, up to 3 deep links allowed in the description to help encourage thoughtful submissions and value for keeping the listing well positioned.

Here is a list of features being considered for the next version of the phpLD PR Update Tool:

  • Customisable data centers to use for the PR update - useful for pre-stable PR updates from Google
  • Status message indicating when the update has completed.
  • Installation confirmation - to check all files have been placed in correct location.
  • Bugfix: Use full php tags in all code.
